motivation

This poster absolutely kills me.

And it goes with one of my favorite quotes that I pulled out of a magazine and have hanging on the fridge:

To seduce my husband's stomach, I must go to the one who tempted him, she of the low-cut blouses and high fat content: Giada. Yes, I'm cooking with the enemy.

a funny thing happened on the way to the movies...

Last weekend Bix and I headed to our favorite movie theatre in Doylestown for a late afternoon movie. It was threatening to rain as we rushed up to the ticket window a few minutes late for the show. There was one person ahead of us, buying two tickets for the same movie. When he was given his total ($11 for two tickets), he laughed in disbelief and asked the ticket-man if that was for two tickets. He went on to say that he was from New York City and that is usually the price for one movie ticket. The ticket-man reassured him that that was his total price. The New York City ticket buyer was still so excited that he turned to us and asked if we were seeing the same movie. We said we were, and he excitedly turned to the ticket-man and said, "Add two more tickets, I'm treating them to the show." Not having something like that happen before, we were barely able to thank him before he turned and handed us our two movie tickets and headed into the dark theatre.

So if you are out there, Mr. New-York-City-living-Doylestown-visiting-blue-tank-top-wearing-young-man, we send out a hearty thank you!

Lunching with Dar Williams

Those are the words I never in a million years thought that I would ever say, but truth be told, I made lunch for Dar Williams! You are probably dying to know what I made, so here goes: a Turkey sandwich (no cheese), an apple and a cookie. Oh, and coffee. From Starbucks, of course. Yes, I know, it's not exactly the gourmet feast that I imagined I would be making for Dar Williams, but it was her request and so there you have it.

Am I getting ahead of myself? Are you bursting with curiosity wondering why I made lunch for Dar Williams? Let me go back to the beginning....

I am a huge Dar Williams fan. Bix is an English teacher. What do the two have in common? Dar Williams is also a children's book author! When I found out that she was going to be performing at the theatre down the road from my house, I immediately bought my tickets and then I told Bix that he should try to have her visit his class and speak about writing. Long story short, he did and she said yes. Well, her agent said yes. Needless to say, I was excited beyond belief. I was even more excited to learn that Bix and I would be eating lunch with her and that I would be making the lunch. Woohoo!

The visit turned out great. It was so cool to hear her talk about writing and the process that she goes through. Oh, and even better....here is a video of Dar performing one of my favorite songs, Iowa:

And if you are sitting there, reading this post and wishing you could have been there too, wish no more....here are some pictures!

Discussing her latest book

I wouldn't have found this last photo if I didn't sneak back to Bix's classroom for the lunch stuff. I'm not sure what to think about this...

And there you have it, folks. In a nutshell, my fabulous Friday spent with Dar...see that? We're on a first name basis already!

i've been taken...by my grocery store!

I really do not think I would have noticed this if I didn't already have a little bit of ice cream left in the freezer. I was at the store the other day and I knew we were running low on Edy's Light Ice Cream and so I picked up another one. As I was unloading groceries, I put the new ice cream in the freezer next to the old ice cream. It was only then that I realized the new ice cream was 1/2 of a quart smaller than the old ice cream! I pulled out my receipt to see if maybe the price reflected the smaller size, and do you think it did? No! Same price, smaller size. Can they do that? I don't know why, but this really irked me and I was annoyed that I had been "taken" by the grocery store and Edy's Ice Cream. Later that night, I was telling Bix my story and he said, "Why don't we just make our own ice cream?" Now I was excited...I had been wanting to make our own ice cream for awhile now and now here was our excuse!

But now my dilemma...

What kind of ice cream maker should I get?

I've been reading Amazon reviews for two types of Cuisinart Ice Cream Makers. As with every product I read reviews for, there is a mixed bag of positive and negative for each Ice Cream Maker.

Does anyone else make their own ice cream? Suggestions, please!

I can grow whatever I want in my garden, Bix.

Dear Bix,

If I want to grow a garden of pink flamingos, well then, I will. You may think they look tacky, but do you know what? I hated the ugly cactus that pricked poor little Bella all the time, and that is still in the garden, isn't it? And what about the ferns that look as if they have been burnt to a crisp in the heat of the summer? Yup, still there. (Although, I do have to admit that the ferns look kind of really good right now) I may not be a cool gardener, like you, but I can try. I can grow a beautiful garden of pink flamingos...if only you would give me a chance. But do you know what? I have already decided what to do. My retro pink flamingos get to stay where they are. And there you have it. And do you know what else? I'm getting a new one every year. So there.

Love, Me
